What are the Causes of Neck Hernia?
Patients often apply to the doctor with complaints of neck and arm pain. The part that protrudes from the inside of the disc presses on the nerve root from the spinal canal, and as a result, pain is seen in the neck and arm. This is a situation that negatively affects the quality of life. Apart from this, there may be weakness and sensory defects in the arm and hand as a result of pressure on the nerves going to the arm. More serious complications can occur if precautions are not taken, and the discs put pressure on the spinal cord:
- Stuck while walking and disturbance in walking posture
- Electric shock sensation or tingling towards the legs seen throughout the body
- Deterioration of fine motor skills in the hands
- Loss of balance and coordination
- Sensory loss
- Thinning of the arm
- Weakening in reflexes

How is Neck Hernia Diagnosed?
The diagnosis of neck hernia is usually made as a result of the physical examination of the patients who present with pain. The time of onset, character and spread of pain are factors that facilitate the diagnosis. Examination to understand how muscle strength, sensation, and reflexes are in the arms and hands is also necessary for a definitive diagnosis. However, imaging techniques are also used to understand exactly where the pressure is or if there is another cause of pain. X-ray, myelography, computed tomography (CT), and MR are used for definitive diagnosis.
While X-ray reveals the general condition of the spine, compressions related to the structure of the spine and bone pathologies can be detected more in computed tomography. MRI, on the other hand, provides visualization of the spine, spinal cord, and surroundings. At the same time, it is possible to determine which disc is compressing, which deterioration in the structure of the disc, and which nerves are compressed by MRI. The EMG method is also used to understand whether the nerves are damaged or not. Thanks to the small electrical currents sent to the nerves, it is possible to detect damage to the nerves using this method.
What is Neck Hernia Treatment Methods?
Surgical intervention may be necessary for patients with persistent pain, loss of strength, and spinal cord compression. This surgical intervention is called discectomy. This method is a method in which the part of the disc pressing on the spinal cord and nerve is removed. Surgery is performed by making a small incision in the front of the neck or on the back of the neck. Where the surgery will be performed depends on the location of the hernia, the content of the surgery, and the preference of the doctor. Like all surgical interventions, this intervention also has risks of various complications. These risks include post-operative bleeding, spinal cord damage, nerve damage, or infection. Hoarseness and difficulty in swallowing can also be seen in operations performed from the front, that is, the neck region. The hernia may recur in some of the patients due to the general health status, family history, and post-operative life preferences of patients. Recurrent hernias can be seen between the same or different vertebrae. After the surgery, patients can be discharged within 24 hours and return to their daily activities gradually.
